The Johnnie Mae Scholarship Fund

My grandmother, Johnnie Mae (Theus) Cornelius, was someone that truly loved and supported me. Her death in 2014 changed my life and was a challenging time for me while I was earning my doctoral degree. My dissertation is dedicated to her. The Johnnie Mae "Granny" Scholarship Gift Card award is created to honor the memory of a great and loving grandmother whose legacy of care, support, and love continues to shine in my life. 

The gift card/award to the college/university student store will be valued at $50–$100. It can be used at the college or university student store to assist with purchasing textbooks, supplies, and other items that support the recipient's educational journey. Many students face basic needs insecurity. By providing gift cards to on-campus student stores, we will enhance students' college experience.

Goal: $1,000 by December 31, 2025. Donations are welcome after 12/31 too. Our goal is to award 2 recipients in Spring and Fall 2026 and be able to support more students moving forward. The scholarship application will become available in January 2026 to students pursuing higher education in Southern California at an accredited community college or university in Spring 2026.
